The radiance of metal becomes more enchanting when its surface is embellished with a raised design. Repoussé is a classical means of embossing and shaping soft, malleable metal from it's reverse, whilst 'Chasing' is used to refine the design from the front by sinking back the metal. Such techniques utilise the plasticity of soft metals, forming shapes by localised pressure. Though relatively slow, a maximum of form is achieved in one continuous sheet of metal showing the results of the direct contact of the handheld tools , a condition not always apparent in other techniques where evidence of the working methods are usually eliminated.
